Members and related units:

In order to effectively enhance the ability of research, development and creation of popular science works in China, to consolidate the basic materials for selecting popular science topics, and to strengthen the reciprocal sharing of global popular science resources, the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) intends to solicit basic topics of popular science for universities, scientific research institutes, relevant popular science institutions and individuals at home and abroad. Popular science works in three categories: popular science exhibits, popular science pictures and texts, and popular science micro-videos will be selected and awarded to the candidates. Relevant popular science works will be presented to representatives of important organizations and outstanding individuals from the global scientific and industrial circles during the World Conference on Science Literacy for a week.

I. Organizational Structure.

Organizers: China Science and Technology Museum, foundation for the development of Science and Technology Museums in China, Chinese Association of Natural Science Museums (CANSM).

II. Requirements for Topic Selection

1. Basic scientific research.

Based on the study of human beings' understanding of natural phenomena, revealing natural laws, acquiring new knowledge, principles and methods, focusing on basic disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology and biology, it embodies the scientific concept and the condensed scientific spirit formed by human beings in the process of seeking laws and truth. For example, the optical properties of conic curves, the forces and reactions, the discovery of radioactivity by Beckler, and the discovery of the true features of lightning by Franklin's kite experiments.

2. Scientific and technological innovation. Focusing on the key areas of economic and social development, focusing on agriculture, energy, resources, environment, oceans, transportation, biotechnology, information technology, laser technology, space technology, new materials technology, advanced manufacturing technology, etc.

Reflecting the changes brought about by technological innovation to human beings and society in view of the important scientific research and technological inventions which are forward-looking, pioneering and exploratory. For example, ocean tidal energy utilization, precise manipulation of robots, unmanned, soft landing of the moon and so on.

3. Hot spots in social life. Closely related to public life and long-term concerns about healthy life, food safety, disaster prevention and mitigation, science fiction and other topics, reflecting the increasingly wide and profound impact of scientific and Technological Development on the production and life of human society. For example: prevention and treatment of major diseases, the role of food additives, science and technology interpretation in science fiction movies, etc.

III. Forms of Participation

Firstly, register on the website. Then fill the personal data in the "Personal Center" column before participating in the competition. Click on the "Selection of topics" column and upload the selected topics according to the suggestions. There is no limitation on nationality or age. Any team or individual can participate in and can submit an unlimited number of works.

Collection time: 11 January - 31 January 2018.

IV. Submission Requirements

Submitting content of popular science topics includes topics category, topics and content description. The submission requirements are as follows:

1. It is scientific.

2. It is innovative and can arouse curiosity.

3. The title is distinct and the writing is concise, which is convenient for the development and production of popular science works.

4. The content description is clear and accurate.  

V. Selection

(1) The evaluation takes the form of network evaluation, including classification and comprehensive evaluation. An expert group will be set up by the sponsoring unit to screen the uploaded topics, and 800-1000 selected topics will be selected as the basic topics. After comprehensive evaluation, 100 topics will be selected as the topics of popular science works released in this contest.

(2) The selected basic topics will be published on the official website of the competition in February 2018.

Teams or individuals will receive the honorary certificate of "Envoy of Science Popularization" issued by the organizer. Fundamental topics will be included in the material bank of the CAST, which will serve the needs of the public for a long time.

(3) Ten authors will be randomly selected from 100 selected topics of popular science works, and they will be eligible to participate in the 2018 World Conference on Science Literacy free of charge. The selected topic will have the opportunity to be published globally and solicit popular science works as the topic of the "2018 China International Contest of Popular Science Works".
