On February 27, 2023, the Sparklink International Academic Salon was successfully held online, sponsored by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) and the Sparklink Alliance and organized by the CAAI Membership Service Working Committee,. Adhering to the concept of “openness, focus and leadership”, the CAAI and the Sparklink Alliance invite elites from all over the world. Focusing on short-range wireless communication technology, they aim to enable the advancement of Sparklink technology to reach all corners of the world and serve thousands of industries.
During this event, Sergi Abadal, a distinguished researcher of the N3Cat group of the Department of Computer Architecture in Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, delivered a presentation on “Accelerating Computing with Wireless Networks inside Computing Packages”.
Sergi Abadal believes that computing systems are ubiquitous in our daily lives and have changed the way we learn, work or communicate with each other. Therefore, our progress is closely linked to the improvements brought about by the new generation of processors at the core of these systems. A common feature of current computing systems is that their internal data communication has become a fundamental bottleneck. With the death of Moore’s Law, academia and industry are forced to search for new methods to build faster processors, and the increasing amount of traffic and variability within computing systems makes traditional interconnect solutions inadequate.
In this context, Sergi Abadal’s group at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) envisions that the current bottlenecks can be eliminated by the use of short-range wireless communication technology, which could revolutionize the field of computer architecture in the coming decades.
In this presentation, Sergi Abadal introduces the concept of wireless networks at the chip level and in computing packages, describing their technologies for supporting terahertz wave bands, advantages and disadvantages compared with existing interconnections, and unique differences with more traditional wireless networks. Finally, Sergi Abadal introduces the contributions of his team in the design of such wireless networks:from channel modeling to protocol design, and the impact of such wireless technologies on accelerating general-purposeand AI-specific processors, as well as quantum computers at the computer architecture level.
