Notice of the 8th “Huawei Cup” Intelligent Design Competition

The 8th “Huawei Cup” intelligent design competition for Chinese college students (hereinafter referred to as the “competition”) will be held from February to August 2018.

The aim of the competition is to show and build the ability of solving problems with intelligent science theory and technology, improve the comprehensive design ability of college students, cultivate their innovative consciousness and teamwork spirit and promote the reform of teaching practice of intelligence and related subjects in colleges and the cultivation of students’ practical ability.

II. The rules of the competition

1.     Participants

Full-time undergraduate and graduate students can participate. Graduate and undergraduate students can form teams respectively or in a mixed team. (Even there is one graduate participant in a team, the team will be considered as a graduate students’ team.)

2.     The form of teams

Students should sign up as teams. Participants shall form teams freely. Each team shall have no more than 3 students and the team must have a leader and an instructor who are chosen by themselves. The number of participating teams is unlimited.

3.     Registration form

(1) The teams should register online in the registration system of the competition website (www.saikr.com/aidc/2018). After the registration is completed, participants should download the registration form of participating teams in the system, then invite the instructor to sign on the paper version of the registration form and stamp the official seal of the participating team’s college, and scan or take photos to upload it in the registration system.

(2) Teams can voluntarily recommend the school network review experts, and fill in the system.

The corresponding entry form can be downloaded from the competition guide.

The expert group of the competition shall check the eligibility of the participating teams in accordance with the regulations of the competition (see competition guide on the website for details), and announce the participating teams on the website before April 14, 2018.

4.     Competition topics

Independent topic or designated topic

Independent topic

(1) The teams can choose the topic independently, which must be closely related to artificial intelligence. The panel will review the themes the entries, and the organizing committee reserves the right to ask the teams to modify the entries that do not meet the requirements, or to disqualify them from the competition. The competition will not accept any topics that are violating national laws and regulations. The author needs to specify 1-2 technical fields for his own topic, including image processing, video analysis, speech processing, natural language processing, multimedia information processing, brain-computer interface, automatic control, robot, big data mining, intelligent sensor and others (please specify the technical name).

(2) The competition site provides Windows and Linux platforms for contestants. If the entries need other platforms, please prepare by yourself.

(3) Products that have been publicly released and obtained commercial value are not allowed to participate in the competition; No entries with intellectual property disputes are allowed; Entries that have participated in other competitions and won awards shall not participate in the competition; Products to be released in cooperation with enterprises are not allowed.

Designated topic

(1) There are 9 designated topics, all of which are definitely related to intelligent technology and formulated by the sponsor Huawei technologies co., ltd. and the organizing committee based on the actual conditions, including detailed topics, descriptions, requirements and regulations on the presentation form of works. (2) All the designated topics are directly related to the needs of the industry and can reflect the intelligent characteristics, which to some extent presents the needs of the industry for intelligent technology. Teams are encouraged to choose this form.

5.  The requirements of entries

The content of the participating team should be independently designed and developed by team members. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. Once plagiarism is found, the team will be disqualified from the competition, and the relevant instructors and universities will be held accountable.

 

III. Competition schedule

Registration date: February 25, 2018-March 31, 2018

Preliminary team announcement: April 14, 2018

Online submission deadline for preliminary entries: May 31, 2018

Final list announcement: June 30, 2018

Final and awards: mid to late August 2018

 

IV. Competition format

Online comment for preliminary and spot final

1. Requirements and evaluation methods for preliminary entries

(1) The preliminary works and related documents are used for the network review by the experts.

The participating teams shall submit preliminary materials online (www.saikr.com/aidc/2018), including entry report (note: if the designated topic is applied, the submission requirements shall also meet the specific requirements for the selected topic), and complete information including relevant software packages and video.

(2) The related design report shall include at least the following contents:

System scheme, function and index, realization principle, hardware block diagram and software programming;

System test program, test equipment, test data, result analysis, realization function and characteristics.

(3) The text of all documents should be small four characters, 1.5 times spacing. Please pack all the materials and submit the preliminary materials in the registration system before May 31, 2018.

File name format should be “team number + school + team name + entry name” (for example: number +xx university + Huawei cup team 1+ personalized chat robot. After the submission deadline, the organizing committee will organize experts to online review the entries submitted by the participating teams. According to the results of network evaluation, the list of finalists will be determined by the panel.

2. Final

The organizing committee will announce the finalists on the competition website on June 30, 2018. After qualifying for the final, teams can refine their entries. The final is scheduled to be held at Guilin University of Electronic Science and Technology in mid-to-late August 2018.

(1) The final includes entries display, test and defense.

a) Entries display: The participating teams, in the form of exhibition boards, make a brief display and introduction of their entries, and explain the design ideas, overall schemes, novelty, technical difficulties, development prospects, etc., as an important way for participants to communicate with each other and experts to understand the whole situation. Participants can also bring their works for practical demonstration.

b) Test: All teams will bring their own work and documents to the final place for testing and submit their work (including software and hardware) to the secretariat of the organizing committee. In the finals, the organizer will only provide computers, switches, routers and network interfaces equipped with Windows and Linux operating systems. If there are special requirements for the test environment, each team should bring its own test equipment.

c) Defense: each team will have 15 minutes to rejoin, including 10 minutes of PowerPoint presentation, 5 minutes of spot presentation and experts’ questions.

(2) The final is divided into three stages.

Stage 1: selecting 2-3 teams to reply to the panel of judges composed of all experts, and unifying the standard of experts’ scoring;

Stage 2: the remaining teams will defend in groups according to the type of entries;

Stage 3: the top ranked teams in the first two stages will reply to all the competitors, and one representative of each team will vote for the competition, according to the number of votes to assess the champion, runner-up and third prize.

The organizing committee shall be responsible for the explanation of the matters not covered herein.

V. Award setting

There will be special prizes (the champion, runner-up and third prize), first prize, second prize, third prize, Huawei special prize, excellent exhibition award, excellent organization award, excellent instructor award.

The outstanding participants in the competition will be directly qualified for the interview by Huawei.

Brilliant team achievements will be eligible for the “Wu Wenjun AI science and technology award”.
