On October 26, the China Association for Science and Technology held a spiritual symposium for worker in scientific and technological fields in Beijing, with the aim to study and implement the spirit of 19th National Congress of the Communist Party. Gang WAN, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, and minister of science and technology, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Jinpeng HUAI, Party secretary of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, executive vice chairman and first secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology, presided over the meeting. And famous mathematicians such as Academician Le YANG and other more than 30 well-known experts and scholars, first-line researchers, science popularization representatives, and science and technology workers of middle and young generations attended the symposium.

At the symposium, scientific and technological workers from different fields and industries talked about their understandings of the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. They all unanimously expressed their strong recognition of Xi Jinping Thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a New Era and resolutely supported the Central Committee of the Communist Party, with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core. They gave full support to the strategic decision-making arrangements made by the party's 19th National Congress, resolved to unify thoughts and actions into the spirit of the 19th Party Congress, and condense wisdom and strength into the implementation of the tasks put forward by the Party's 19th National Congress. In the new era, we must make full play of the scientific and technological community with a strong belief and mission, and strive to achieve the two centenary goals. Attendants also made suggestions on accelerating the construction of an innovative country and building a world of science and technology.

Centered on the mission of new journey science and technology workers in the new era, the delegates spoke enthusiastically and exchanged their ideas. Hong LI, vice chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology and dean of the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, said that listening to the general secretary’s report ignited the passion of the scientific and technological workers, enhanced the confidence of the Long March in the new era and the historical responsibility of building China a powerhouse of science and technology. We must enter the new era of science and technology with full passion and more pragmatic work, and become more committed. Academician Fu GAO, deputy of the 19th National Congress, member of the Standing Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology, and director of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the new era has put forward new requirements for the scientific and technological community. We must not only do frontier scientific research, but also solve scientific issues involving people's health and the socio-economic development which requires us to firmly grasp the basic national conditions of the primary stage of socialism, firmly base ourselves on the greatest reality of China, and uphold the party’s basic line, the lifeline of the party and the country, and the happiness line of the people, resolutely implement the instructions of the General Secretary, make great efforts to do scientific research, write scientific papers, and use scientific and technological achievements to deliver benefits for all.

Experts attending the meeting said that they must accurately understand the scientific connotations of the main contradictions in our society in the new era. Xiangyi LI, winner of the United Nations Science and Technology Organization Kalinga Science Prize and former director of the China Science and Technology Museum, said that he has been engaged in science popularization for nearly 35 years, and personally experienced the history of the pioneering, hard work of science popularization and great achievement we scored under the leadership of the party. It is necessary to examine the science popularization work from the transformation of the main contradictions in the new era. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, we must cultivate scientific talents, strengthen the innovation of popular science theory, promote the internationalization of science popularization, and improve the popularization of science from knowledge level to dissemination of scientific thoughts, methods and ways of thinking to help people work and live scientifically and create a better future. Academician Deyi LI, chairman of the China Association for Artificial Intelligence, said that artificial intelligence has been written into the report of the 19th National Congress, which has inspired us greatly. The current imbalance between the artificial intelligence needs and the development of artificial intelligence in China is the main contradiction in our disciplines area. We must resolutely implement the new requirements of the 19th National Congress for scientific and technological innovation, strive to make China's artificial intelligence technology lead the world, carry out artificial intelligence science popularization and build artificial intelligence technology think tanks for the public.

The 19th National Congress of CPC on the strategic objectives of Healthy China also aroused heated discussions among delegates.

Academician Huang Luqi, Standing Committee of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology and Standing Vice President of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, said that the 19th National Congress of CPC clearly calls for both Chinese and Western medicine to be emphasized and the cause of traditional Chinese medicine to be inherited and developed. It shows that the General Secretary pays close attention to the development of Chinese medicine.

We should strengthen the inheritance and research of traditional Chinese medicine theories and methods, promote its clinical and production practice. And we need to strengthen the scientific research and development of new Chinese medicine for clinical diagnosis, treatment, prevention and health care to produce original results. What’s more, we should protect the development and utilization of traditional Chinese medicine resources, and promote the innovative development of Chinese medicine enterprises.

Lu Huaiyu, Standing Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology and President of Guoxin Rural Technical Service Association in Hejia, Hebei Province, said that the 19th National Congress of CPC mentioned the implementation of the strategy of Healthy China. As grass-roots scientific and technological workers, they should consciously perform their duties of popularizing science and advocate a healthy and civilized lifestyle in the whole society to prevent and control major diseases.

General Secretary Xi Jinping's ardent expectation of the youth aroused strong resonance among the delegates.

Tian Mei, Vice Chairman of Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology, Expert of Thousand People Program and Vice President of Binjiang Hospital Affiliated to Medical College of Zhejiang University, said that the General Secretary's report was broad, profound and rich in connotation.

Listening to the report, I am deeply inspired and very confident about the future.

As the backbone of socialist modernization, scientists and technicians should be more clear about the mission and direction entrusted to them by the new era, strive hard, innovate bravely, and bring together the great power to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese dream.

Ji Xiangyang, the 13th China Youth Science and Technology Award winner and professor of Tsinghua University, said that young scientists and technicians are of importance for a powerful country in science and technology.

Young scientists in the new era should keep the entrustment of General Secretary Xi Jinping, keep their original mind, strengthen self without stopping, hold world with virtue, cherish the world and repay the people with the achievements of scientific and technological innovation.

Professor Wang Zhiheng of Peking University said that the 19th National Congress of CPC has raised the construction of ecological civilization to an unprecedented height, and the strategic needs of the construction of ecological civilization need theoretical support.

Young ecology scientists and technicians should not only focus on the frontier to make original breakthroughs, but also write ecological articles on the ground to contribute our strength to building a beautiful China.

Wangang pointed out that scientists and technicians should resolutely implement the new requirements and deployments for scientific and technological innovation put forward by the Congress.
