On February 27, 2023, the First Intelligence Fusion Industry Forum of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence was successfully held in Chengdu, Sichuan. Among the distinguished guest speakers are: Dai Qionghai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of the CAAI, He You, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and vice chairman of the CAAI, Academician Fan Guobin, Academician Yang Shanlin, Academician Gui Weihua, Academician Zhang Hongke, Academician Luo Yi, Academician Li Detian, Mr. Wang Haifeng, Baidu Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Zhao Xianming, Dean of the Institute of Future Information Technology of Harbin Institute of Technology, Mr. Fan Zhongwei, research fellow of the Institute of Optoelectronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Zhang Xuejun, research fellow and Deputy Director of Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Tian Qi, Chief Scientist of HUAWEI CLOUD Artificial Intelligence, and Professor Kong Lingjiang, Vice President of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.
The Intelligence Fusion Industry Forum was sponsored by the CAAI, and jointly organized by the Professional Committee of Intelligence Fusion of the CAAI, Baidu, the National Engineering Research Center for Deep Learning Technology and Application, and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Led by a number of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the forum gathered top experts and scholars in the field. There were 11 special reports, attracting more than 200 offline participants and more than 800,000 online viewers throughout the day. The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Academician Fan Guobin.
In the opening speech of the forum, Academician Dai Qionghai said that the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is restructuring the new look of the world in the technological domain, the great rejuvenation and modernization of the Chinese nation has entered a critical stage, and AI has ushered in a larger market. He hoped that the First Intelligence Fusion Industry Forum would further promote academic research, technological breakthroughs, talent training, and industrial development in the field of intelligence fusion, provide a cooperation and exchange platform for high-level research groups engaged in related fields and make new contributions to the development of AI in China.
Academician He You, the chairman of the conference, shared with the experts the development of the professional committee since its establishment and expressed his sincere gratitude to those who were concerned about and made outstanding contributions toits development . Academician He then introduced the preliminary planning of the activities of the committeethis year, sending invitation to experts and scholars to actively join the committee and devote themselves to the cause of intelligence fusion. Finally, Academician He hoped that the experts and scholars both online and offline would have thorough exchange of views and generate new inspirations at the conference, and wished the conference a complete success.
Professor Kong Lingjiang, Vice President of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), said in his speech at the opening ceremony that UESTC has a solid foundation in the field of AI, and the Professional Committee ofIntelligence Fusion provides an excellentplatform for experts and scholars in this field to cooperate andcommunicate, which will create strong synergy for technological breakthroughs and industrial development in the field of i intelligence fusion in China. After the opening ceremony, two special reports in the morning session were hosted by Wang Haifeng, Chief Technology Officer of Baidu, and Professor Li Xiu, Tsinghua University.
Academician Yang Shanlin delivered a presentation entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Intelligence Fusion”. Based on a review of the development history and latest development trends of AI, he focused on discussing the impact of the development of AI technology on the research paradigm of natural and social sciences, analyzed the development law of AI technology and its integration with domain science, as well as the development trend of integration between AI and manufacturing service industry.
Academician Gui Weihua delivered a presentation entitled “Industrial Intelligence Technology and Applications”, in which he introduced the background and development of industrial intelligence technology, summarized its technical framework, technicalfeatures, and value advantages, and analyzed the key scientific issues and research contents of industrial intelligence from the perspectives of intelligent perception, intelligent control, and intelligent coordinated optimization. He also introduced the application of industrial intelligence technology in the intelligent online inspection of key operation information of blast furnace ironmaking.
Zhang Hongke, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), made a special report entitled “Research and Exploration of Emerging Network: Smart Integration Identifier Networking”. The report introduced the team’s research and exploration of emerging network technologies, focusing on the evolution and application prospects of new network technologies represented by the smart integration identifier networking in the national special communication private network project and space-air-ground integrated network.
Wang Haifeng, Chief Technology Officer of Baidu and Director of the National Engineering Research Center of Deep Learning Technology and Application, delivered a special report entitled “Deep Learning Plus, a New Engine for Innovation and Development”. He said that AI’s technological innovation and industrial development have entered the “deep learning plus” stage. Technically, deep learning plus knowledge marks a crucial development direction of AI technologies. Knowledge-enhanced deep learning allows the fusion of massive data and large-scale knowledge, thus achieving more effective and efficient machine learning. From the ecological perspective, deep learning plus upstream and downstream ecological partners, chips, frameworks, models, and applications constitute a benign ecology that promotes collaborative and innovative development in each link based on feedback. From the industrial point of view, deep learning plus enables thousands of industries to reduce costs and increase efficiency, innovate products and services, and make the industries more intelligent at a faster pace. The deep learning platform plus the foundation model consolidates the base of industrial intelligence.
Professor Zhao Xianming, head of the Future Information Technology Research Institute of Harbin Institute of Technology, delivered a report on the topic of “Opportunities for Industrial Development in Digital Transformation”. He introduced the underlying logic of digitalization from its background and key technical aspects, briefed the attendees on the application scenarios and industrial opportunities amid industrial digitalization, and finally analyzed the strategic positioning and research topics of the Institute against digitalization.
In the afternoon, Zhang Xuejun, deputy director of Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Liu Yu, visiting professor of Tsinghua University, hosted the special report session.
In his report “High-speed Optoelectronic Devices: Physical Basis of Intelligent Information Fusion”, CAE member Luo Yi introduced the position of optoelectronic technology in economic and social development, analyzed the opportunities and challenges of China’s optoelectronic devices, and presented the future development hotspots of optoelectronic technology based on the three characteristics of photonic techniques in his report.
Academician Li Detian delivered a special report on the topic of “Development Conception of Space Electric Propulsion Intellectualization for Multi-Task Scenarios”. Professor Li introduced the basic principles and technical system of space electric propulsion, expounded its development trend from the dimensions of application fields, typical scenarios and application benefits, and summarized the intelligent development trend of the technology in terms of design, manufacturing, assembly/testing, operation and architecture. Also, he analyzed the development ideas, application difficulties and key technologies of space electric propulsion intellectualization based on the technical practice cases in aerospace and gave suggestions and cooperation proposals for space electric propulsion intellectualization.
Fan Zhongwei, a research fellow at the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of CAS, introduced the application and development of laser technology in China, the expected achievements in the next few years and AIR’s progress on the key technical difficulties of the high-power short-pulse laser as well as the preparation and application of core components in his report “High-power Laser Materials and Components”.
Zhang Xuejun, deputy director of Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, CAS, introduced the latest progress in the design and manufacture of high-resolution and wide-field view space cameras in recent years in the report “Thoughts on the Application of Intelligent Fusion Technology in High-Performance Space Optical Systems”, and summarized its merits and demerits compared with similar cameras in the world. In particular, it remains a problem to be solved urgently how to apply the intelligent fusion technology to further improve the manufacturing accuracy and efficiency and quickly generate valuable data information in the manufacturing and application ends. Based on this, Zhang Xuejun gave his ideas and examples of preliminary engineering applications.
Dr. Tian Qi, chief scientist on AI in HUAWEI Cloud, introduced that as data accumulate and computility and algorithms develop in recent years, AI models are gradually developing into general foundation models in the scientific computing field in his report: HUAWEI Cloud Pangu Model and Scientific Computing. To make AI inclusive and pervasive, Huawei Cloud has developed the Pangu foundation models and established a set of easy-to-use AI-driven industrial development modes that can be universally used in textual, visual, multi-modal and structured data, realizing large-scale AI development and application. In addition, in order to accurately forecast medium- to long-range weather, Huawei Cloud launched the Pangu model, of which the accuracy in medium- to long-range weather forecast exceeds that of the models based on traditional numerical methods in the field (including that in European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, ECMWF), with its prediction speed rising by 10,000 times.
In “Multi-radar Intelligent Collaboration: Concept, Problems and Challenges”, Professor Kong Lingjiang from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China first introduced the origin and basic principles of radar, briefly described the existing multi-radar collaboration modes at the intelligence level, data level and signal level, and gave its conceptual connotation and technical characteristics. On this basis, preliminary explorations have been made on the multi-radar intelligent collaboration technology based on coalitional games architecture. Finally, the problems and challenges of the technology were summarized.
At last, Liu Yu, deputy secretary-general of the special committee, summarized the meeting and announced the successful conclusion of the first Intelligent Fusion Industry Forum of CAAI.
The first Intelligent Fusion Industry Forum of CAAI is where experts reported informative, intriguing technologies in their respective domains. Briefing the present researchers and scholars on the basic principle, core industrial difficulties, research progress, and prospects, they presented a feast of technologies. Thanks to the firm support from the CAAI, this forum has provided a good platform enabling academic research, industrial cooperation and exchanges for experts on intelligent fusion in China and the rest of the world, thus facilitating the rapid application and commercialization of intelligent fusion technologies in various industries.
